Student Citizen of the Year Awards

As a national, community-based service organization, Ruritan takes pleasure in recognizing young citizens.  Each year the Lucketts Ruritan Club, through the efforts of the Citizenship and Patriotism Committee, awards a certificate and gift card to a student at Lucketts Elementary and Smart’s Mill Middle for their outstanding citizenship. The awardees are selected by teachers and staff members at the student’s school.  The criterion for selection includes being a good student, interacting well with faculty and schoolmates, volunteering their time, and providing a good example to others. Rudy Youth in Lucketts

Providing service to your community, enjoying fellowship with your neighbors and establishing good relationships with others are life habits that can begin in childhood.  Ruritan National established Rudy Youth Clubs to foster the development of these habits in our local elementary, middle and high school students.

In 2014 the first Rudy Youth Club for our community was established at Lucketts Elementary through the sponsorship of the Lucketts Elementary School PTA.  Naomi Hattaway, a Ruritan Club member and also then Lucketts Elementary PTA President established the first Club with the assistance of Karyn Price and other parents interested in encouraging these habits in our school children.

Every year since 2014, the Lucketts Elementary School Rudy Youth Club has provided community service through an annual Coat Drive.  It was discovered that year, when Ms. Carolyn Clement came to the school as it’s Principal, that a large portion of the school’s children came from families who struggled to provide winter coats and shoes for their children.  Working together with the Parent Liaison office at school the Rudy Youth Club and the Ruritans collect coats from the community to meet this consistent need.

The Club meets once a month after school and members are drawn from the 4th and 5th grade classes.  With the direction of an adult leader, the Rudy Youth members structure a series of community service projects that they complete from October through May of each school year.

In 2018, with four years of “graduating Rudy’s” headed off to middle school, the first Rudy Youth Club was established at Smarts Mill Middle School. More than 60 local children participate in this Club between the two schools.  Plans are in development to offer a Rudy Youth Club at Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School as well in the future.
